The lesson I have thoroughly learned, and wish to pass on to others, is to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives.
Gertrude Jekyll
I've loved the natural world all my life. I spent lots of time in the North Country, eventually as a professional photographer in Lancaster. A move to California landed me in a nursery and landscape design became my new passion.
Back on the East Coast, I acquired professional training and certifications in Horticulture and Landscape Design while working at Boston-area landscape design firms. But Coos County was calling me back and The Northern Garden was born.
With help from friends and the wonderful community of Stratford, we've created The Northern Garden Nursery and Landscape Design service.
What makes us stand out from the rest is that we are not your typical landscaper. Although mowing, mulching, building walls, and hardscape construction is very important, our passion and focus is the plants. Living in our northern climate limits us to which plants live and thrive in our region, which is why good design and plant knowledge is essential.
I approach every project with a photographer's eye for composition, perspective, texture, and the color of each of our North Country seasons. I combine design expertise with decades of practical experience. Working with Nature, (she's in charge, don't forget!) we create an environment for the soul and senses that is a true delight.
For me, each landscape is a blank canvas. Whether it's a brand new business build, a long-neglected country garden, a custom home or simply a patch of ground that you just don't know what to do with, I'll help you sketch out a plan that considers the long-term effect you want, the demands of the site, the plants I know will do best in your area, your budget and maintenance requirements.
Our philosophy is planting "the right plant for the right place" and our expertise of zone 4 gardening is the difference between a horticulturist and a landscaper. We pride ourselves on our 22 years of experience and education, along with being certified horticulturists, master gardeners and certified landscape professionals. Also, we offer horticultural consulting services for businesses, large estates and residential homes.
Heritage and community is a big part of what we do. For many years, we have supported Stratford's own Cohos Historical Society through volunteering and hosting fund raising events at our garden. Just about every town in New Hampshire has a organization that preserves the town's history for future generations. Find one in your community here>
